From the Master’s Voice to the Disciple’s Script: Genizah Fragments of a Bible Glossary in Ladino

Citation:

Abstract:

This work includes two Genizah fragments of a Hebrew-Ladino glossary with exceptional characteristics: the unconventional spelling of the Ladino glosses following the Biblical Hebrew orthography with dots, and the reflex of strong phonetic influences of Judeo-Arabic. By means of a philological analysis of the glossary it was possible to obtain some details about data and geographic origin of these fragments, and the frame of its creation. The results of the translation’s analysis allows the classification of the glossary in the group of traditional (en)ladinamientos made by Sefardim in the 16th century in the Ottoman Empire.
